Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, was founded in 1167. Due to its prominent harbour, the city has traditionally been recognised for its positive relationship with the transport of goods. Almost an entire millenium later, that same characteristic remains and can similarly be applied to transporting goods by bicycle. With over 1000 km of bicycle infrastructure and 40.000 Copenhageners owning cargo bikes, there is no question as to why Copenhagen is one of the key cities in the CycleLogistics project. The project not only furthers the 'City of Cyclists' goal of becoming a carbon neutral city, but uses the experiences of Copenhagen in both transport and urban communications to inspire the rest of Europe.
As Copenhagen is one of the forerunners in cargo bike culture, Copenhagenize is welcoming the challenge of creating an even higher level of cargo bike use by the city, its businesses, and its citizens. However, our aim is not only to increase the number of cargo bikes around the city, but also to improve the symbolism, conditions, and facilities for cargo bike users. Showing them that Copenhagen prioritises human powered traffic.
One of our first activities is hosting the Focus Group Seminar. Engaging stakeholders and growing excitement and vested interest for this cause. Gathering feedback from a variety of different backgrounds and generating enthusiasm for CycleLogistics in the stakeholders' various sectors. Determining which of the Focus Group Seminar participants will become key stakeholders. Directly after we will begin working with them to implement the Living Laboratory.
The Living Laboratory reflects our need to improve the status of cargo bicycles on the urban landscape. The concept includes more on-street parking for all the project groups- municipalities, businesses, private users- and graphic communication to encourage these groups to accommodate for cargo bike users.
With more parking, facilities, and positive symbolism, more businesses will be able to deliver goods by bicycle and more people will be able to 'shop by bike' - another key component of the project.
We are also working with the City of Copenhagen's Bicycle Office campaign, CityLogistics, to encourage delivery companies to use a bicycle for their 'last delivery mile.' Thereby decreasing congestion and carbon emissions in the city. The national government has promised a payment charge to enter the City by motor vehicle which would nicely support the argument for last mile delivery by bicycle.
Working with the city government, local businesses, and the residents of Copenhagen we plan to achieve a comprehensive and well connected improvement to the use and management of cargo bikes in the city. We hope to create a city wide network of cargo bike-friendly accommodations, making it just as easy, if not easier, for them to transport goods as it is for motorised vehicles. All of the activities will be filmed, photographed, documented, and analysed to provide a visual overview and dissemination for further research and inspiration.
